Azoles removal from water

Azoles are a versatile group of organic compounds featuring a five-membered ring containing nitrogen and sometimes sulphur atoms. These compounds find application in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and chemical manufacturing.

In pharma, Azoles play a vital role as antifungal agents, aiding in the treatment of fungal infections. They are also used in agriculture to protect crops from fungal diseases and have applications in aquaculture for similar reasons. Azoles’ versatility extends to the chemical manufacturing industry, where they serve as building blocks for producing a wide range of chemicals and polymers. This broad spectrum of applications has led to their ubiquity in our environment, making their presence in water a growing concern.

Despite their utility, Azoles present challenges when it comes to water pollution. Their presence in aquatic ecosystems can disrupt natural processes. This impacts on both aquatic life and human communities relying on these water sources for drinking and recreation.

What we achieved

Our Nyex Ellenox system recently successfully reduced total azoles from a concentration of 20.54mg/L to 0.01mg/L with energy consumption of 12.4kWh.

Azoles in pharma and chemical manufacturing

Azoles are prevalent in pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing processes. Contamination can occur during production, leading to the release of Azoles into wastewater streams.

To mitigate this, manufacturers should implement effective water treatment strategies to remove Azoles from their effluents prior to discharge. Failure to do so not only poses environmental risks but may also result in regulatory non-compliance.

Key advantages of Nyex Ellenox™

Other Azoles Water Treatment

Apart from our Nyex Ellenox technology, several techniques are currently employed for removing Azoles from water:

Chemical Oxidation

Chemical oxidation processes involve the use of strong oxidizing agents like ozone or hydrogen peroxide to break down Azoles into less harmful compounds. Handling the chemicals is a hazard and they usually produce a toxic sludge which needs careful disposal.

Adsorption

Adsorption employs materials like activated carbon to attract and trap Azoles from water. But the activated carbon is ineffective when saturated and needs replacing regularly. This involves being able to access the carbon bed with heavy lifting equipment to remove and replace it. Also production needs to stop whilst the carbon is replaced.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO is a membrane-based process that can effectively remove Azoles and other contaminants from water by pushing it through a semi-permeable membrane. The problem here is there is always a secondary waste stream with concentrated pollutants to deal with. Also, the membranes are expensive to replace and can be easily damaged by certain chemicals.

Conclusion: Azoles removal from water

In conclusion, Azoles’ widespread applications and persistence in water sources pose significant challenges to both the environment and public health. Regulatory bodies like the EPA are increasingly concerned about the presence of Azoles in water and its potential impact.
