Sulfamethoxazole removal from water

Sulfamethoxazole is one of a group of antibiotics contaminating water that can cause anti-microbial resistance. For effective removal of the pollutant, we propose our Nyex Rosalox technology. We have consistently removed sulfamethoxazole to below 0.02 µg/L for various clients.

Sulfamethoxazole Wastewater Treatment

Effective wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in sulfamethoxazole removal processes.

Conventional treatment processes like activated sludge and membrane bioreactors can eliminate a proportion of it from wastewater.

However, trace amounts may still be present in the treated effluent, requiring more sophisticated sulfamethoxazole removal methods.

Does Adsorption remove Sulfamethoxazole from water?

Adsorption offers simplicity, ease of operation, and versatility in treating various water matrices.

However, the effectiveness of the process may be impacted by the pH of the environment and its temperature. It can also be affected by the presence of other organic and inorganic compounds. These compounds can compete for reactants or act as inhibitors.

Variations in any of these factors can have a significant effect on the outcome of the reaction. They should be taken into consideration when planning sulfamethoxazole water treatment.

Additionally, all adsorptive media becomes less effective over time, eventually leading to the requirement to replace or replenish it. This can lead to plant being taken offline for this purpose.

In this article we also explore why an adsorptive process like GAC (granular activated carbon) is less than eco-friendly.

Sulfamethoxazole Removal by Ozone

Ozonation is an established technique for sulfamethoxazole removal from water. By introducing ozone, a powerful oxidizing agent, sulfamethoxazole can be efficiently degraded and removed.

During the process, hydroxyl radicals are generated, which react with sulfamethoxazole, breaking it down into smaller, less harmful byproducts.

Ozone treatment has rapid reaction rates and the ability to eliminate a wide range of pharmaceutical compounds.

On the downside, it is important to consider the additional complications of handling a hazardous substance like ozone. This may manifest itself in heightened safety requirements and additional staff training.

Also, the process uses large amounts of energy and can generate harmful by-products which will need further treatment.

Bearing all that in mind, here at Arvia we feel there are far better alternatives, outlined below.

Sulfamethoxazole Removal by Adsorption:

Adsorption processes provide an alternative method for removing sulfamethoxazole from water. Materials such as activated carbon and zeolites effectively adsorb sulfamethoxazole molecules, facilitating their removal from water sources.

Sulfamethoxazole removal with Nyex Rosalox™

Nyex Rosalox pilot plant with GAC column

Arvia has developed a treatment system that combines two BAT technologies, adsorption and oxidation, into a single-step process. No chemical dosing is required, and no toxic sludge is produced.

The advantages of a Nyex system include:

1

Lower operational costs. Careful selection of materials results in low OpEx.

2

Targets the localised pollutant. Can preferentially treat certain organic compounds.

3

Ongoing water treatment without interruption. There’s no chemical dosing and no sludge to deal with.

4

High removal rates and efficiency. Ask for a treatability trial to check your water.

5

Two technologies in one unit work together for greater efficiencies.
