Geosmin removal from water

Geosmin a compound with a unique earthy smell, derives its name from Greek words ‘ge’ (earth) and ‘osme’ (smell). It belongs to the class of geosmin and methylisoborneol (MIB), which are responsible for the characteristic musty odour in water. While geosmin itself is not harmful to humans or animals, its presence in water can lead to a host of problems.

Geosmin finds applications in various fields, including perfumery and flavouring due to its earthy aroma. It also plays a crucial role in agriculture and aquaculture, where it contributes to soil health and influences the growth of certain crops and aquatic organisms.

However, the issue arises when geosmin finds its way into water sources, adversely affecting the taste and odour of drinking water. In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory bodies recognize the need to control geosmin levels in water to ensure its palatability and safety.

What we achieved

Our Nyex Rosalox system recently successfully removed Geosmin to less than 2ng/L with energy consumption of 0.075kWh.

Other ways to remove geosmin from water

Apart from our Nyex Rosalox technology, several other techniques are currently employed to remove Geosmin from water. Each technology has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. We think overall that our Nyex Rosalox overcomes all of the disadvantages. But you can read about the other technologies here:

Oxidation by Ozone

Oxidation processes involve the use of strong oxidizing agents like ozone or hydrogen peroxide to break down pollutants into less harmful compounds.

Adsorption

Adsorption employs materials like activated carbon to attract and trap potentially toxic solvents from water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

RO is a membrane-based process that can effectively remove contaminants from water by pushing it through a semi-permeable membrane.

Conclusion: Geosmin removal from water

In conclusion, geosmin removal from water is essential to ensure its palatability and safety.

Various methods, including ozone treatment, granular activated carbon, and reverse osmosis, have been employed for this purpose.

However, the Nyex Rosalox™ system by Arvia Technology emerges as a leading solution, offering efficiency, sustainability, and versatility in geosmin and contaminant removal.

As we strive to protect our precious water resources and maintain their quality, innovative technologies like Nyex Rosalox™ play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.
