Despite the need for sustainable healthy food to service the world’s growing population, trout farming faces criticism around a question of sustainability.

Arvia’s Nyex technology provides sustainable water treatment solutions globally to both saltwater and freshwater-based trout farming operations.
Fish are the most efficient converters of food of any farmed animal and trout is the most efficient of any farmed fish.

Global consumption of rainbow trout – the most commonly farmed variant – is forecast to increase around 5% annually. It’s estimated to reach a market size value of $7 billion by the end of 2033.

Trout is farmed worldwide; according to the WWF, the top producers are Turkey, Iran, France, Italy, the US, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Poland and China. In the UK, trout farming in mainly found in central and southern Scotland, Yorkshire and the South Coast.

Arvia Technology works globally with the aquaculture industry developing innovative solutions to trout farming challenges.

Nyex™ Systems are Designed to Solve Trout Aquaculture Challenges without Chemical Dosing
Whether stock is being raised in fresh or saltwater – and whatever life stage is being considered – there’s a Nyex™ system that can decrease losses through disease or tainting, whilst increasing yield.

Antibiotic removal

It’s often necessary to treat stocks with antibiotics. This can have a detrimental effect on the water in RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) facilities, segregated river systems or ponds.
Arvia’s Nyex™ technology can remove antibiotics down to trace levels, allowing water to be safely discharged or reused.

Removal of off-flavour compounds

Especially in RAS systems, off-flavours such as geosmin can be an issue. Whilst non-toxic, it gives the meat in table-stock an unpleasant flavour, reducing its appeal to consumers and decreasing the value of the harvest.
Arvia’s Nyex technology has been proven to greatly reduce the instances of geosmin in RAS systems, creating greater value.

Ethical and sustainable approach to Trout farming

Arvia’s technology prioritises sustainability, so our systems don’t require toxic chemicals to be introduced into the process, meaning simple operations with less training requirements and no COSHH requirements.
Apart from the obvious environmental benefits, this is a consideration when dealing with closed RAS facilities, as it minimises risks of potentially catastrophic operator errors.

Arvia Technology Protects Trout Aquaculture systems

Ensuring effective water treatment in aquaculture water systems is essential for the productivity and success of all types of trout fisheries. Implementing an efficient water treatment solution in a trout aquaculture system offers significant benefits to both the fish and the bottom line of the operator. Whether the primary motivation is regulatory compliance or producing a higher-quality product, every aquaculture facility can now achieve sustainable water treatment with Arvia Technology.

Why choose a Nyex water treatment process?

Fish raised in Arvia treated water have been shown to put on weight more quickly and have greater disease resistance. This results in a superior quality through the growing cycle – from fingerlings to table-stock. Plus, the aquaculture facility reaps benefits from using treated water. This simplifies operations and reduces long-term maintenance requirements. Additionally, facilities can bolster their environmental initiatives by achieving high sustainability performance.

There are many reasons our clients use Nyex™ technology to process their water in aquaculture. Here are just a few:

1

Ethical and sustainable

Nyex™ systems produce little environmental impact to achieve ‘trace level’ water treatment. Our systems are based on electrochemistry and adsorption – with a modern twist. The only outputs are harmless gases and water.

2

No waste byproducts

Our Nyex Rosalox™ treatment system uses our unique Nyex adsorptive media which (unlike Granular Activated Carbon systems) regenerates itself in-situ. Also unlike GAC, Nyex™ only requires 1-3% replenishment annually. That means no toxic sludge to regenerate or add to land-fill.

3

Removes organic micropollutants

Our Nyex™ technology is proven to effectively reduce or remove hazardous organic micropollutants, pesticides, off-flavours, antibiotics, and colour. This makes it ideal for aquaculture installations – on or off-shore.

4

No chemical dosing

No toxic chemicals are required to be added to the Nyex™ reactor. This means no need for any COSHH requirements and no need for costly staff training. It also means there is no risk of delicate fish stocks coming into contact with any hazardous chemicals.

5

Flexible modular system

Arvia Nyex™ water treatment systems are modular, meaning efficiency is maximised whilst footprint is minimised. This is particularly useful in offshore scenarios where complete systems can be easily fitted into standard shipping containers or moved around on skids. It also means that systems can be easily expanded.

6

No downtime

Our Rosalox™ systems combine the best of electrochemistry and adsorption with our unique Nyex™ media. This technically-advanced media regenerates itself whilst in use, meaning no downtime to exchange media and no toxic sludge to transport away, unlike GAC systems.

7

Plug and play

The Nyex systems have no moving parts and are simple to operate with just an on-off button. This means staff training is minimised, and systems can be brought on-line quickly – ideal for batch processing,

World leaders in Trout farming aquaculture

Our solutions for the aquaculture industry are helping trout farming across the globe. Every solution we devise for trout farms is tailored to the exact needs of the facility. For us to help clean your water, we will need to understand exactly which organic compounds are in the water and what systems are already in place.  We will follow the below process shown to support, and determine your individual trout aquaculture treatment requirements.

1

Bench testing in our
laboratories

We can test your water against a range of our products to determine the treatment performance and efficiency under different conditions, providing data and insights to support the optioneering process.

2

Pilot testing on your
premises

We can install a pilot plant to assess and develop the treatment process under real operating conditions, and over longer time periods to capture variable conditions.

3

Data driven full scale
design

Data driven full scale design increases certainty over cost and performance early in the project, reducing risk. On-site installation, commissioning, and optimisation support from Arvia ensures maximum return on your investment.

Why Nyex Rosalox™ is ideal for offshore Trout Aquaculture

In offshore aquaculture, the removal of sea lice often requires transferring stock into tanks or well boats. Various methods are used including the use of hot water and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2.)

The water used in the latter process requires treatment before discharge. GAC is often used, but it needs replenishing regularly which is less than easy when water treatment systems are on barges or tenders.

Nyex Rosalox™ systems on the other hand, require only a 1-3% annual top-up of media and minimal maintenance as they have no moving parts. This makes a Nyex system ideal for rugged and remote locations like ships.

Why Nyex™ is highly suitable for RAS Trout Aquaculture

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) facilities are designed to accommodate stock at all life stages. There are however several challenges in a closed system.
First, constant monitoring of the water is essential due to the high risk of biosecurity breaches. Any breach often requires the use of antibiotics. As a result, APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) will then need to be removed from the water.

Arvia’s Nyex systems are ideal for this, being able to reduce countless APIs, as well as Endocrine disruptors and other harmful substances down to below measurable levels.

Secondly, fish grown in an RAS (or ponds, races and other freshwater environments) may develop off-flavours from compounds like geosmin and MIB. While not toxic, these off-flavours can diminish the value of the harvest. Nyex™ water treatment can remove these compounds and avoids the necessity to purge the fish with fresh water before marketing, putting less stress on them.
