In Europe since the 70s, EU directives have been introduced to set out a waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, recover) and a system of permits for waste disposal. Subsequent legislation was brought in to ensure the ‘polluter pays’ principle as well as landfill taxes, regulations for end-of-life vehicles, electrical goods and so on.
Arvia’s Water Treatment systems have found many diverse applications worldwide. For the Waste Management industry, there are some significant advantages:
Our Nyex™ water treatment processes are modular and can be scaled to fit limited space in your facility. This means we can be part of your water reuse strategy, cleaning water at source.
Remove corrosion inhibitors, solvents and organic process chemicals to below the level of detection.
We remove hazardous organic compounds from wastewater to very low levels. Many persistent chemicals are left behind by traditional water treatment processes, but not our specialty process.
Although conventional (‘legacy’) water treatments are capable of removing many commonly found pollutants, a lot of wastewater resulting from both instances above cannot be effectively and economically treated to remove many recalcitrant pollutants, pharmaceutical APIs and other ‘synthesised’ chemicals often used in modern industrial processes.
This also includes water used in battery recycling, agriculture and aquaculture, textile manufacturing, semiconductor and electronics manufacturing as well as healthcare.
Until recently many legacy water treatments have struggled to remove hazardous organic compounds from water.
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) systems have historically been some of the most effective, but they have several drawbacks. These include needing regular media replacement – leading to extensive downtime and producing toxic sludge that requires recycling or disposal.
On the other hand, Nyex™ water treatments from Arvia Technologies use an innovative combination of adsorption and electrochemistry. They can also run unattended for long periods with minimal maintenance.
Many of Arvia’s Nyex™ systems use our unique media which only requires a 1 – 3% top up annually. Unlike many other legacy systems, they don’t require the introduction of any hazardous chemicals like ozone to achieve remarkable results – normally to below Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC).
The key to this is because our innovative Nyex™ adsorptive media regenerates itself in situ and remains almost 100% efficient throughout its life.
Nyex™ systems do not produce any harmful by-products during the treatment process.
Outputs are simply water and harmless gases. This results in a simple, safe and reliable tertiary water treatment system.
Nyex™ systems have no moving parts, leading to reduced maintenance; units can be remotely situated too, as they do not need constant monitoring.
Tell us what organic compounds you need to remove from your water and our consultants will give their recommended approach which might involve:
Nyex™ tertiary water treatment systems offer several advantages over all other water ‘polishing’ systems:
Due to the way they work, our water treatment systems can be simply regulated to achieve the purity level of the water that is desired. Currently, many pollutants can be removed up to parts per billion.
However, when we started (in 2007), we were achieving figures in the parts per million – a demonstration of how our R&D has progressed between then and now. As a result, any future regulations will be easily surpassed by our Nyex™ treatments.
Nyex™ systems can treat a wide range of contaminants, some of which can damage or reduce the lifespan of components in other (normally upstream) water treatment systems. For instance:
Nyex™ reactors have no moving parts, leading to reduced maintenance and minimal downtime. Additionally, as no hazardous chemicals are introduced in the process, there are no additional COSHH requirements.
Nyex™ reactors are compact in size which leads to flexible positioning within any industrial environment. It’s also easy to add more capacity when needed by simply hooking up more in parallel.
Many of Arvia’s technically advanced systems use our unique Nyex™ adsorptive media. Unlike GAC systems which need replenishment on a regular basis, Nyex retains its effectiveness, meaning there’s no need to take the system offline to replenish media.
Our systems are simple to power up and power down – no complex start-up process to worry about. This means they’re ideal for batch or intermittent processes.
Each Nyex™ water treatment system is specially designed to remove certain compounds or groups of pollutants. The extent to which this removal is achieved can be easily controlled, so regulations can be met without wildly surpassing them, meaning a cost-effective process.
To operate our systems, there’s no need for complex COSSH training for operators. Also, because there are no moving parts, maintenance is considerably simplified when compared to competitor systems.
On our systems which feature both electrochemical and adsorptive science, we feature our Nyex™ adsorptive media. This regenerates itself whilst in use, so unlike GAC systems, never produces a toxic sludge.

Arvia produces a range of tertiary wastewater treatment systems designed especially to remove many recalcitrant compounds, APIs, EDCs and many more hard-to-treat synthesised chemicals from wastewater.
We have worked successfully with many different industries, each with vastly different challenges in water management.

In this world of limited resources, we celebrate and support the aspiration and drive by some semiconductor facilities to try to reuse 100% non-process water. It is clearly the right thing to do for the environment and will go some way to protecting the environmental reputation of this industry.
But perhaps the stronger driver is the cost savings that can be realised by increasing the amount of non-process water that is reused.
We feel very at home with these drivers, with having one of the most eco-friendly water treatment processes on the market, which is also extremely cost effective in terms of CapEx and OpEx compared with alternatives.
Cleaning wastewater from a semiconductor foundry is not a one-step process. There are many types of contaminants to deal with, which need to be removed to below the level of detection. It is a specialist job, from a careful understanding of the waste streams, to smart sensors for segregating streams, to optimise waste management and treatment.
Our water treatment process, Nyex™ is extremely effective in removing toxic contaminants such corrosion inhibitors (for example, Azoles where we have demonstrated >99% removal), solvents, and organic contaminants in general to below the level of detection.
What is important to you is important to us. We can support your validation or verification requirements. We understand your need for low-risk solutions so that is why when you work with Arvia you get the option for a three-step delivery:
We can test your water against a range of our products to determine the treatment performance and efficiency under different conditions, providing data and insights to support the optioneering process.
We can install a pilot plant to assess and develop the treatment process under real operating conditions, and over longer time periods to capture variable conditions.
Data driven full scale design increases certainty over cost and performance early in the project, reducing risk. On-site installation, commissioning, and optimisation support from Arvia ensures maximum return on your investment.
