Arvia’s Nyex™ technology compliments anaerobic wastewater treatment as a pre-treatment process. Talk to our specialists today.
Biological wastewater treatment is a secondary effluent treatment step designed to remove pollutants which remain following primary wastewater treatment such as filtration and settlement. A biological process relies on micro-organisms to naturally break down organic wastes from water.
Anaerobic wastewater treatment breaks down organic waste without the presence of oxygen. Running a plant of this nature requires skilled operation to keep it processing efficiently. For instance, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) needs to be carefully monitored and regulated.
One of the issues that will stop a facility working to its fullest capacity is the presence of Phenols or other hazardous substances that will limit the biological organisms digesting the organic waste in water.
Simply put, the addition of Nyex™ wastewater treatment reactors prior to an anaerobic digester will make the process more efficient and reliable. Nyex™ systems will remove phenols and other harmful pollutants down from mg/l to ppb – all in a compact and easy-to-manage process that requires no hazardous chemicals to be added and does not produce any toxic sludge.
For more information on the science of Nyex™ see this page.
Nyex processes work efficiently and are simple to commission, operate and maintain. Throughput can be adapted to suit other parts of the wastewater treatment process.
In tests, Nyex™ Rosalox achieved phenol removal to trace levels at an energy rate of 12.8 kWh per kg of phenol. With wastewater treated in this way, surface area of organics can increase, accelerating settlement.
Wastewater (even wastewater containing appreciable levels of COD) is easier to manage and accelerates hydrolysis, with the result that the process will run more efficiently.
Arvia’s next generation water treatments are in use worldwide in a large variety of industries and are suitable for treating recalcitrant compounds and polluting chemicals in fields such as:
After thorough analysis of a client’s wastewater and field trials, Nyex™ systems are tuned to remove specific chemicals or compounds at maximum efficiency. In the case of anaerobic digesters, this would be mainly phenol and similar chemicals that would otherwise subvert the biological process in the digester.
Nyex reactors are simple to set up and require just water in/out connections and a power source. Internally, our reactors have no moving parts so are reliable and easy to maintain.
Nyex Rosalox™ uses a unique combination of electrochemistry and adsorption. Rosalox can remove many non-biodegradable CODs from wastewater including pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, industrial chemicals, pesticides and organic additives.
It is ideal as a pre-treatment for anaerobic biological treatments due to its ease of operation and low maintenance requirements when compared with Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC).
No moving internal parts leads to increased reliability and less downtime. Operator intervention is therefore minimised. As a result, once installed, Nyex™ systems offer more dependable tertiary water treatments.
Nyex™ systems are modular so expansion of existing plant is as easy as hooking up further reactors in parallel.
With a small footprint, reactors can be mounted on skids for easy movement with a forklift. Alternatively, many of our reactors are mounted inside 20’ shipping containers, so can be sited adjacent to existing treatment plant – even outside.
Once factory-configured and commissioned, Nyex™ water treatments do not require complex start-up procedures – it’s a simple as pressing a switch and starting the water flow.
This means our reactors are suitable for continuous use as well as batch processes where discontinuous operation is the norm.
Although Nyex™ reactors are configured at delivery to remove certain chemicals or compounds, the amount of removal can be easily controlled. This leads to a cost-effective process, where regulatory levels can be accurately met.
Once set up and running, Nyex™ systems require little intervention. This is due to the fact that no hazardous chemicals need to be added and our innovative Nyex adsorptive media only requires a 1 – 3% top up annually under normal use. The reason is that Nyex actually regenerates itself as part of the electrochemical process.
Nyex™ media doesn’t create toxic sludge as it doesn’t break down like in a GAC system. Instead, pollutants adsorbed to its surface are converted to gas and water by electrochemistry.
Arvia’s Nyex™ systems are part of a new generation of water treatments out-performing ‘legacy’ plant developed in the last century.
As part of water pre-treatment for anaerobic plant, Nyex out-performs GAC in almost every way. For more details and to arrange an on-site trial, arrange a conversation with one of our water treatment scientists.
