Overview of World Water Week

World Water Week 2024 is a significant global event centred around water cooperation, peace, and security.

Organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), World Water Week brings together experts, policymakers, practitioners, and advocates. It provides a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and driving action to address global water-related challenges and serves as the annual focal point for addressing worldwide water issues.

It emphasises the critical role of water in shaping our collective prosperity and wellbeing.

World Water 2024 takes place in Stockholm, Sweden.

World Water Week 2024

The theme for the 2024 World Water Week is ‘Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future.’ It will take place from August 25 – 29, 2024, both online and in Stockholm, Sweden.

The theme underscores the interconnectedness of communities and nations across regions and the collaborative efforts required to achieve a peaceful and sustainable future.

The organisers say that around 8,800 individuals from 193 countries and territories will engage in discussions and activities, of which 52% are women and 42% are under 35.

It should be remembered that Earth’s supply of water is finite, and as water is essential for life, their aim is to create a more ‘water-wise’ world.

How Can the Water Crisis be Solved?

During World Water Week 2024, experts, policymakers, and practitioners will engage in discussions on a wide range of water-related topics including:

• Water Diplomacy and Peacebuilding
• Climate Change and Water Resilience
• Water Governance and Equity
• Nature-Based Solutions
• Water and Health
• Innovations in Water Technology
• Youth Engagement and Education

Of most interest to those of us in the water sector is the penultimate item on this agenda.

Our opinion is that for too long, the role of regulation and the fact that a large proportion of industrial wastewater can actually be reused has not been brought to the forefront in discussions on water security.

Water Scarcity Crisis

So we understand what is possible now and we also have a good idea what will be possible in a few years time. Sadly, it seems many regulators are not up to speed with current developments in water treatment. We feel that regulation lags behind what is currently possible and unlike in other environmental fields, it has less ambitions for future regulation.

How to Improve Water Security

As a result, many millions of litres of water per day are wasted – often by being tankered away to specialist incineration sites, adding to, rather than subtracting from, companies’ carbon footprints.

Although in April 2024 the UK Government placed a 12 month moratorium on permits for new incineration plants (often called ‘waste to energy’ installations) there are still hundreds operating worldwide.

Some relevant regulations could put a stop to much of this at a stroke – once regulators realised what can now be done with the latest generation of water treatment kit. This would have a quantifiable effect on not only the climate – with far less CO2 and poisons being emitted – but also to many countries’ water security concerns.

Vast amounts of water are used in industry every day – for instance 2700 litres is used to make one cotton T-shirt – so many countries would see a positive change if increasing amounts of industrial wastewater were re-used.

Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future

World Water Week 2024 serves as a platform for sharing inspiring case studies and success stories related to water cooperation.

It continues the follow-up process from the UN 2023 Water Conference and concentrates on success stories and lessons learned, aiming to achieve the commitments outlined in the UN Conference’s Water Action Agenda.
