Lincomycin in water

In humans, lincomycin is normally administered by intramuscular injection – often over the course of a couple of hours to get to the ideal serum levels and to maintain effectiveness over an extended period. About 15% of an average 600mg dose is not metabolized and the residue eventually finds its way into the sewers.

In animal production facilities, lincomycin is often mixed with feed. Again, the waste stream from these facilities (often with direct run offs to the land) will contain a sizeable proportion of unmetabolized antibiotics.

Removing Lincomycin from water

Lincomycin is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic used to treat patients that have adverse reactions to penicillin.

Lincomycin has also been used extensively in some territories for cattle and swine production and is also a commonly used veterinary drug, mainly for small animals and birds.

It’s one of a group of antibiotics contaminating water that can cause AMR (anti-microbial resistance.)

AMR can render medications against various infections ineffective. This is especially concerning when considering antibiotics, as often there is no alternative treatment.

So, Lincomycin water pollution is something that needs addressing as a matter of urgency.

Using GAC to remove Lincomycin

Granular activated Carbon (GAC) can be used to remove lincomycin from wastewater. However the issue with all GAC systems is that the carbon media used only has a finite life. Eventually it will need replacing which normally means taking the filtration system offline and purchasing replacement media.

The spent media is a toxic sludge which either needs incineration or reactivation., Either way, this is a high energy use scenario. In extreme cases, sludge is just sent to landfill.

Does adsorption remove Lincomycin ?

Conventional adsorption and filtration techniques have only limited success with antibiotics contaminating water.
