Understanding PFAS and their Health Implications

In this article we discuss PFAS and the implications of these forever chemicals on human and animal health. Studies have indicated that these chemicals can accumulate in the human body over time, leading to potential adverse health effects. We discuss the routes of exposure, health impacts and how Arvia is helping to tackle the PFAS problem.

PFAS have been associated with negative health outcomes

PFAS and Health Concerns

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals that have used in various industrial applications, consumer products and processes. They are primarily characterised by their persistence in the environment and their ability to bioaccumulate, which allows them to concentrate and magnify throughout ecosystems and food chains.

Routes of PFAS Exposure

The primary routes of human exposure to PFAS include:

  • Contaminated Drinking Water: PFAS can leach into groundwater sources, making drinking water a significant pathway for human exposure.
  • Contaminated Food: PFAS can enter the food chain through contaminated soil and water, affecting crops and animal products.
  • Inhalation Exposure: PFAS exposure can occur from breathing dust or airborne PFAS
  • Dermal Exposure: Skin contact with PFAS-containing products

Once PFAS enter the human body, they can remain there for an extended period, even after exposure has ceased.

Health Impacts and Toxicity

Among the many PFAS compounds, PFOA and PFOS have been the most extensively researched concerning health impacts and toxicity. The sheer diversity and number of PFAS compounds present challenges in characterising health effects, especially considering potential cumulative exposures.

Exposure to PFOA or PFOS has been associated with a range of negative health outcomes, impacting the liver, immune system, early-life development, and cardiometabolic health. Additionally, there is increasing evidence linking exposure to PFOA, PFOS, and other similar PFAS to endocrine disruption and reproductive issues.

Factors Influencing Health Risks

The risk of health effects associated with PFAS exposure depends on several factors:

  • Exposure Factors: Dose, frequency, route, and duration of exposure all play crucial roles.
  • Individual Factors: Sensitivity and existing disease burden can influence susceptibility.
  • Other Determinants: Access to safe water and healthcare quality are also significant.

Current PFAS Research and Findings

Ongoing research aims to unravel the mechanisms of PFAS toxicity. Epidemiological evidence suggests associations between increased exposure to specific PFAS and certain health effects. However, inconsistencies in human studies, due to varying study designs, make it challenging to definitively link PFAS exposure to specific health outcomes.

Insights from Animal Studies

Animal studies provide insights into the potential health effects of PFAS, though the relevance to humans can vary due to physiological differences:

  • Higher Doses in Research: Most animal studies use PFAS doses higher than typical human environmental exposures.
  • Observed Effects: In animals, PFAS are linked to liver and immune system damage, low birth weight, birth defects, delayed development, and newborn deaths.

Despite these findings, not all effects observed in animals may occur in humans. Scientists employ various methods to estimate how exposure and effects in animals might translate to human health.

How Arvia is Tackling the PFAS Challenge

Arvia has pioneered a unique technological solution to tackle our planet’s PFAS challenge head-on. Using advanced electrochemical oxidation, our PFAS wastewater treatment system ensures complete destruction of “Forever Chemicals” without harmful secondary waste. Scalable and sustainable, it helps industries meet regulations while safeguarding water and public health.

Nyex Florenox™ Reactors represent the next generation of Arvia’s electrochemical oxidation technology, built to perform efficiently at low pressure and temperature. The EO process relies on the mass transfer of PFAS to the electrode surface, which is optimised by Florenox advanced 3-D anode. These innovations make Florenox highly efficient and eco-friendly solution for PFAS wastewater treatment.

Current and Future Directions

Recognising the potential dangers of PFAS, numerous countries and organisations have taken steps to address their presence in the environment. For instance, some governments have set regulatory limits on the acceptable levels of PFAS in drinking water, while others have initiated cleanup efforts in contaminated areas. Additionally, there is ongoing research aimed at developing safer alternatives to PFAS in consumer products and industrial applications.

The scientific community continues to explore the health effects of exposure to mixtures of different PFAS. As research progresses, our understanding of how these substances impact human health may evolve, informing better safety standards and regulations to protect public health.
